Almost every two years, the Sculpture Society (Singapore) working committee will set up a team to organise Wood Sculpture Symposium partnering NParks (Singapore).
As sculptors, we would like to do our part to support and be the voice for environmental protection. This will be done through the upcycling of fallen wood into art to align with the importance of environmental protection for a Clean and Green Singapore.
We used wood from NParks. Each year, many fallen trees and overgrown trees are cut down. NParks will let us have wood as the material for artistic creations. Instead of buying and importing readily prepared wood, the symposium makes good use of fallen trees, which would otherwise be discarded, to turn them into beautiful works of art for the public to enjoy.
Sculpture Society (Singapore) would like to promote the art of woodcarving with constructive interaction through planned activities amongst artists in the community. During the wood symposium, we hosted workshops, internships, exhibitions, bilateral exchange programmes, artist talks, and an art competition.
